Consequences of cognitive offloading: Boosting performance but diminishing memory

چکیده
Modern technical tools such as tablets allow for the temporal externalisation of working memory processes (i.e., cognitive offloading). Although externalisations support immediate performance on different tasks, little is known about potential long-term consequences offloading behaviour. In current set experiments, we studied relationship between and subsequent offloaded information well interplay this with goal to acquire new representations. Our participants solved Pattern Copy Task, in which manipulated costs awareness a test. Experiment 1 ( N = 172), showed that increasing induces reduced This reduction came along lower task but more accurate an unexpected 2 confirmed these findings observed behaviour remained detrimental when were aware upcoming Interestingly, 3 172) not formation under all circumstances. Those who forced offload maximally test could almost completely counteract negative impact memory. experiments highlight importance explicit representations relying did have effects without goal.

Cognitive Offloading Does Not Prevent but Rather Promotes Cognitive Development
We investigate the relation between the development of reactive and cognitive capabilities. In particular we investigate whether the development of reactive capabilities prevents or promotes the development of cognitive capabilities in a population of evolving robots that have to solve a time-delay navigation task in a double T-Maze environment. Analysis of the experiments reveals that the evol...
متن کاملBoosting the Performance of Shared Memory
S hared memory multiprocessors make it practical to convert sequential programs to parallel ones in a variety of applications. Most such machines incorporate caches in each node, to allow data replication, and use a cache coherence protocol to ensure that a processor accesses the latest copy of the replicated data. An emerging class of shared memory multi-processors—nonuniform memory access mac...

The state-of-the-art in automatic speech recognition is distinctly Markovian. The ubiquitous ‘beads-on-a-string’ approach, where sentences are explained as a sequence of words, words as a sequence of phones and phones as a sequence of acoustically stable states, is bound to lose a lot of dynamic information. In this paper we show that a combination with example-based recognition can be used to ...

The cyberspace has become an integral part of modern day life—social, economic, political, religious, medical and other aspects. Without the availability of the Internet today’s businesses, government and society cannot function properly. Moreover, different online social media and blogosphere are bringing people together, providing platforms to share their ideas and allowing their voices to be...
